Greg Gaines has perfected the art of being invisible in high school—just enough to skirt by without inciting drama. His only co-conspirator in invisibility is Earl, with whom he shares a peculiar hobby: remaking classic films in their own terrible fashion. Their carefully constructed anonymity is rattled when Greg's mother insists he rekindle a friendship with Rachel, a classmate facing leukemia. As Greg's careful detachment starts to crumble, he, Earl, and Rachel form an unconventional bond. Amid the raw humor and the awkward realities of adolescence, Greg finds that making a movie for Rachel may just rewrite the script of his own life.
